Description

Perfect binding is a softcover bookbinding method: the printed pages are glued into a flat, square spine and wrapped in a full-colour cover, just like a paperback book. Grafix Media, a Calgary print shop, perfect binds books in-house in 8.5″ × 11″ and 6″ × 9″ sizes, from 40 to 500 pages. Order 5 to 250 books online, from $3.55 per book, ready in 3 to 5 business days after proof approval, with pickup in Calgary or shipping across Canada.

What Is Perfect Binding?

In a perfect bound book, the interior pages are stacked, roughened along the spine edge and glued into a wrap-around cover. The result is a clean, professional book with a flat spine that stacks neatly on a shelf and can carry a printed title. It is one of the most cost-effective ways to produce multi-page books that look polished, and it is the binding used for most paperbacks, catalogues and annual reports.

Popular Uses for Perfect Bound Books

  • Self-published books, novels and anthologies
  • Training manuals and handbooks
  • Corporate and annual reports
  • Catalogues and look books
  • Event, tournament and souvenir programs
  • Yearbooks, colouring books and journals

How We Make Perfect Bound Books

Every book is printed, bound and trimmed in our Calgary shop:

  1. Covers are printed in full colour on 80# or 100# cover stock, then finished with UV coating or soft-touch lamination if you choose one.
  2. Interior pages are printed double-sided on our production laser printer, then cut and gathered into books.
  3. Binding: each book is clamped, and the spine edge is roughened with a saw blade so the glue can grip the paper fibres. We bind with industrial-grade PUR glue, which resists humidity and lasts 10+ years without peeling.
  4. Trimming: the cover is wrapped around the glued spine and the finished book is trimmed with laser-guided cutters for clean, square edges.

Perfect Binding vs Coil Binding vs Saddle Stitching

  • Perfect binding: a glued, square spine with a wrap-around cover. Best for books, reports and catalogues that should look like a paperback and sit on a shelf.
  • Coil binding: a plastic coil through punched holes, so the book lies flat and folds back on itself. Best for manuals, workbooks and cookbooks. See our coil bound books.
  • Saddle stitching: folded sheets stapled through the spine. Best for thinner booklets, programs and magazines. See our saddle stitched books.

Frequently Asked Questions About Perfect Binding

What is perfect binding?

Perfect binding is a softcover bookbinding method. The pages are glued together at the spine and wrapped in a full-colour cover, giving a flat, square spine like a paperback book.

How much does perfect binding cost?

Perfect bound books start at $3.55 per book for a 40-page 6″ × 9″ black and white book with an 80# cover. A 40-page 8.5″ × 11″ full-colour book on 20# bond is $7.15 with an 80# cover. The more books you order and the higher the page count, the lower the price per book. Prices are before tax.

What sizes can you make?

You can order 8.5″ × 11″ or 6″ × 9″ books online. Contact us for custom sizes, materials or finishes.

How many pages can a perfect bound book have?

Between 40 and 500 pages. Pages are printed double-sided, so 100 pages equals 50 sheets of paper.

What paper and printing options do you offer?

Interior pages can be printed on 20# bond, 24# bond or 80# gloss text, in full colour or black and white.

What cover options do you offer?

Covers are printed in full colour on 80# cover stock (+$0.75 per book) or 100# cover stock (+$1.00 per book). You can add UV coating (+$0.50) or soft-touch lamination (+$1.50), or leave the cover uncoated.

Can you print the title on the spine?

Yes, if your book is thick enough. That is typically 60+ pages, depending on the paper.

How many books can I order?

You can order 5 to 250 books online. For more than 250 books, request a quote.

How long does perfect binding take?

Most orders are ready 3 to 5 business days after you approve your proof. If you need your books sooner, contact us to ask about a rush order. We can’t always accommodate rushes.

Is perfect binding durable?

Yes. We bind with industrial-grade PUR glue, which resists humidity and lasts 10+ years without peeling, and trim every book with laser-guided cutters for clean edges.

What is the difference between perfect binding and coil binding?

Perfect binding glues the pages into a square spine for a paperback look that sits well on a shelf. Coil binding uses a plastic coil, so the book lies flat and folds back, which suits manuals and workbooks. See our coil bound books.

What is the difference between perfect binding and saddle stitching?

Saddle stitching staples folded sheets through the spine and suits thinner booklets and programs. Perfect binding suits thicker books, from 40 to 500 pages, with a square spine. See our saddle stitched books.

What files do you need?

We prefer print-ready PDF files at 300 DPI with 0.125″ of bleed. Upload them at checkout or on our file upload page.

Can you help design my cover?

Yes. Choose cover design help ($75) when you order, and our designers will set up your cover.

Do you ship perfect bound books?

Yes. We ship across Canada, and you can also pick up your books at our Calgary print shop.

Where do you make perfect bound books?

We print and bind them in-house in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Do you offer a military discount?

We do, for active and former Canadian Armed Forces personnel. Please look up our discount code at CFONE.
